This book is very different from what I’ve read before. The story is told from a series of memories by a man named Jacob Jankowski, memories of his life with a circus in Depression-era America. Jacob lives now in a nursing home while he is looking back on all his memories. When he was 23 years old, his parents were killed in a car accident one week before his veterinary medicine exams at Cornell University. He walks out, leaving an unfinished test behind and ends up on a train only to learn it’s a circus train, belonging to The Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Uncle Al, the owner of the circus, learns eventually of Jacob’s training as a vet, and hire him to take care of the circus animals.
Jacob develops a guarded relationship with the head trainer, August, and his wife Marlena. August can be utterly charming, but he is a brutal man who abuses the animals in his care, as well as the people around him. And Jacob falls in love with August’s wife, Marlena.. Maybe not his best idea.

I had pretty high expectations about this book, because of its good reviews and that I was really looking forward to the movie afterwards. And usually, I believe that any movies that are based on books, the book is always better and more entertaining. Other people have described this book as phenomenal, romantic, perfect, exciting, and so on. Unfortunately I did not agree.
Why? I don’t think some of the events in the story seem credible enough. And I see the story as a cliché with an easy and predictable ending. The only thing that I really liked about this story, was to learn about the circus life! Something new and exciting. I like the adventure in the book, but the story isn’t exciting enough for me as a reader. It’s alright, it’s not all bad, but I didn’t get caught up in it.

I can see that the author did her research into the period of time in which the book has its setting, and the subject matter (traveling circuses), which I like, and that some of the compelling anecdotes in the story are based upon real events. I find the book more informative than entertaining though. I kind of regret reading it in Norwegian, maybe English would do better? But I’m pretty sure many of you would find this story exciting and really entertaining.
Have you read this book, or seen the movie that’s based on it? What do you think?
